Morpheus Dreaming - A Tribute to Morphine and Beyond

Morpheus is the Greek god of dreams. He shaped and influenced the dreams of gods, heroes, kings, and mortals. The derivative of his name is also the name of a medicinal treatment that relieves pain and yet is incredibly addictive.

We are a Morphine tribute band in Colorado. Enchanted, beguiled, and inspired by the 'low-rock' songs of the 1990s alternative rock band Morphine, we strive to bring that sonic experience to you.

Morpheus Dreaming is a reverie from a trio of seasoned musicians who have come together to bring these sounds into musical wakefulness. Brian, Doug and Tim combine decades of jazz, blues and rock experiences into a sound that blurs all three genres into one.

We call ourselves "Morpheus Dreaming - a Tribute to Morphine and Beyond". The "and beyond" means we also play other rock and pop covers in a 'low-rock' style. Want to hear how Black Sabbath's Paranoid or Billy Idol's Rebel Yell or Tom Petty's Runnin' Down a Dream can sound with sax, slide bass, and drums? That's the dream state Morpheus Dreaming plays in.

The music of Morpheus Dreaming is a unique cocktail of baritone sax, 2-string slide bass, drums, and low vocals. A jazzy, bluesy, alternative rock, beat sound. A film noir vision made for your ears. It is where the three of us like to dream. Come dream with us.

Band Members

Tim Powell

Bass, Vocals

Tim's interest in the low end has taken him from 4-string bass, to 5-string bass, to 6-string bass... and now he's found the beauty in just 2 strings and a slide. He's lived in Colorado since 2000 and has played in numerous projects including bluegrass, original hard-rock, original metal, and cover bands. He actively performs with the rock cover band, Last Men On Earth, and for a decade he played with B52s tribute Hey, Lady! In the 1990s he was active in the San Francisco bay area jazz scene playing upright bass, and he spent a few years coaching student jazz combos at Stanford University.

Doug Carmichael

Saxophones

Doug is a music teacher with the St. Vrain Valley Schools and an active saxophonist throughout the greater Denver area.  He grew up in the Longmont area where he attended Erie High School and the University of Colorado at Boulder. Doug has his bachelors and master’s degree from CU in music education and saxophone performance. He has taught in the Denver Public Schools, Douglas County Schools, Cherry Creek School and the St Vrain Valley Schools. He has played with a variety of groups: the Longmont Symphony, the Longmont Coral, the Lee Thomas Band, Mojomama, the Dale Ness Quartet, the Eric Dorn Group, the Jean Poole trio, See Spot Groove, 3ology, the Matt Pack, DKO, Archie Funker, Makeshift Funk Band, 3rd Degree Burn, and Funk Knuf just to name a few. His work with 3olgoy has resulted in three Cds which have received airplay and accolades locally, nationally and internationally. Through 3ology he is on the Creative Music Works and Tapestry label. Doug continues to be a guest artist and clinician for various private, CHSAA, and CBA sponsored events.

Brian Kaufman

Drums, Percussion

Brian's broad musical tastes led him through a lifetime of gigging bands with styles as diverse as blues, R&B, all-original alternative rock, power trios, art-school-rock, ambient, tribute bands, and jazz combos.   Long-time Denverites might remember him from past original music groups such as the Fourth Republic (80's-style pop), Anne Frank on Crank (alternative/punk), or Supply Boy (riot-grrrl inspired) playing at the Larimer Lounge, Hi-Dive, or the Lion's Lair -- or currently active groups like the Nice Work Jazz Combo (straight-ahead jazz) or Hey, Lady! (a B52's tribute).   But the Morphine tribute band Morpheus offers the unique opportunity to play a mixture of all these styles all at the same time.
